PHEMISTER RESIDENCE / CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA - 2009

A much-needed expansion to a very small, 1-1/2 story bungalow that was less than 1,000 SF, this new addition provided for a kitchen, living and dining areas, and a primary bedroom suite with its own bathroom and a view to the mountains. Situated in a dense urban neighborhood, we wanted to be sensitive to the scale of the house and its neighbors. We depressed the floor level of the addition down 30” from the existing house so it could enjoy taller ceilings in the common areas and so its overall massing would remain deferential to the original house. Wrapped in a cedar rainscreen, and fiber cement board panels, the new architecture compliments the existing stucco without simply repeating it.
